Duties & Responsibilities:

The Music Director provides artistic leadership for the Orchestra, Chorus and Youth Orchestra, developing both traditional and innovative programming that is significant to the orchestra and the community, and cultivates connections to the community and audiences of all ages.  S/he conducts a majority of rehearsals and concerts; evaluates orchestra personnel and auditions new instrumentalists as necessary; proposes program repertoire and guest artists/conductors in consultation with the Executive Director.  While in residence, s/he participates in and supports fund raising and promotional efforts in the community.  The Music Director/Conductor will work collaboratively with the Artistic Advisory Committee and other BPA Committees as required. The Music Director/Conductor will be passionately committed to maintaining and enhancing the excellence of the Orchestra, and operating efficiently within in confines of the operating budget.


Proven ability to provide a performance experience of the highest caliber; thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire, styles, and performance practices; ability to motivate players to reach the highest levels of achievement; acute ear and practical understanding of all orchestral instruments; effective rehearsal technique; strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills, with the vision and passion to make symphonic music relevant for existing and new audiences.  Successful experience as a music director or artistic director of an orchestra, while not required, is desirable.

Compensation & Benefits:

A competitive salary and benefit package will be offered depending on qualifications,  experience, and final contracted requirements.

Organization Description:

September through May performance season; 8 pairs of subscription concerts, including at least one Pops concert, a significant Education Program including eight Childrens’ Concerts with full orchestra, plus performance opportunities with Ballet Idaho and Opera Idaho. Fiscally sound with a $1.7 million balanced budget, and a 50 year history of growth and stability. The BPA comprises a fully professional symphony orchestra, a volunteer Chorus and a vibrant Youth Orchestra, with broad and generous community support reaching an annual audience of 40,000 across the region.
