The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) invites emerging conductors to apply for the position of Assistant Conductor. The successful applicant will work with the orchestra’s conductors, observing rehearsals, acting as a potential cover conductor, and conducting the HK Phil’s Education and Outreach concerts.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Conductor will work closely with conductors of the HK Phil across its 44-week season. This position is a 1-year appointment with the option for a 1-year extension. The successful applicant will:

1. Conduct and present Education and Outreach concerts (Cantonese speaker preferred)
2. Observe conductors in rehearsal, advising on sound balance for guest conductors.
3. Provide musical assistance to the musicians and administration of the HK Phil.


1. A strong musical background and proven skills conducting professional orchestras.
2. A Master’s degree in orchestral conducting or equivalent experience.
3. Fluency in Cantonese is preferred. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Mandarin is desirable.
4. A broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire, conducting techniques, orchestration and instrumentation,
and a desire to conduct a variety of concerts including classical, pops, family and educational programmes.

Short-listed candidates must be available for interview and to conduct the HK Phil on Monday 13 June 2016.
