Conductor: Melbourne Community Orchestra

The Melbourne Community Orchestra (MCO), a volunteer community orchestra, founded in 1989, in Melbourne, Florida, is seeking a conductor, starting in 2017. The MCO rehearses every Monday night from 5:30 PM to 7:20PM from August through June in the Julia B. Goode Rehearsal Hall, and performs 7 concerts throughout the musical year. The Board of Directors tries to schedule a minimum of 5 rehearsals prior to each concert. Concerts are typically held in the Melbourne Auditorium. The MCO consists of a full complement of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion and occasionally draws in additional musicians, as needed for a given performance. The MCO is proud of the efforts of its volunteer musicians in presenting quality music performances to the Melbourne community. The MCO meets budgetary expenses through collections at the concerts, contributions from members of the orchestra and the community, obtaining grants, and selling ads in the programs to local businesses, thus keeping the musical experience free to the community.

The conductor works in coordination with the Board of Directors and the Music Committee to select music for performances, recruit new members, collaborate with other musical organizations in the area, and participate in other activities relevant to the effective functioning of the orchestra.

The MCO seeks applicants with relevant training (preferably at least a Bachelor degree in Music), a varied background in orchestral conducting, knowledge and appreciation for a wide variety of orchestral literature and commitment to the community orchestra.

Applicants chosen for audition will be invited to work with the orchestra from music selection through weekly rehearsal to concert performance of one of the programs beginning in September 2016. An applicant will be chosen before the completion of the 2016-17.
