POSITION:  The Peabody Preparatory seeks an experienced conductor and educator with superior musical and administrative and interpersonal skills to lead and cultivate its premiere large ensemble, The Peabody Youth Orchestra. Comprised of approximately 75 students from more than 40 area high schools in Baltimore and its surrounding communities The primary goal of the orchestra is enriching the lives of young musicians and audiences, through the rehearsal and performance of orchestral repertoire at the highest level. In addition to its biannual concerts on campus, PYO has performed at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Verizon Hall at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center and toured the northeast United States, Canada and Europe.

DUTIES:  Reporting to the Executive Director, The Music Director conducts weekly rehearsals from 1:00-3:00 pm each Saturday through the school year at Peabody’s downtown Baltimore campus, preparing the group for two annual concerts in December and May. Other duties include holding 3-4 audition days per year – currently in early June and late August, liaising with the directors of the Preparatory’s other large ensembles on audition scheduling and ensemble policy, working with the Institute’s concert and production staff, attending monthly meetings of the Director’s Council, and attending the school’s annual concerto competition. The music director has the support of a student orchestra manager who assists with the weekly rehearsals, select Preparatory faculty for assistance with sectionals and bowings (as needed), and the PYO Parent Resource Organization which assists with fundraising, merchandise sales and post-concert receptions.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred in orchestral conducting, music education, or music performance; Five years professional conducting experience, preferably some working with youth in an educational setting. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire and demonstrate effective rehearsal techniques.

LOCATION: The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore, where PYO rehearses and performs, and also has three satellite branches in the communities of Towson, Annapolis and Howard County, MD.  The Preparatory is more than 120 years old and has approximately 1,650 students studying all orchestral instruments, guitar, piano, dance, theory, early childhood, orchestra, chamber music and more.  Our faculty is comprised of highly skilled and dedicated individuals.  We embrace the novice as well as the serious student aspiring toward a career in music.

COMPENSATION:  Commensurate with experience.
