Position title: Pioneer Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra Conductor

Announcement: The Pioneer Valley Symphony announces the search for the Conductor of the PVS Youth Orchestra (http://www.pvsoc.org/youth-programs/youth-orchestra/). This orchestra, founded in 2013, currently gives 3-4 performance each year in various locations in Western Massachusetts. In the 2015-16 season, the PVSYO performed one fall program in November, participated in a joint concert with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra in December, and will perform twice in April and May.

Job responsibilities: The conductor of the PVS Youth Orchestra will:
● lead weekly rehearsals of the PVSYO on Saturday afternoons during the school year from September–May at Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Massachusetts
● conduct performances of the PVSYO
● hold auditions for incoming members
● be available for other PVSYO events, such as school performances, as required .
The conductor will also work closely with the PVS Managing Director, PVS Music Director, Youth Orchestra manager(s), and other PVS musicians and staff to run a thriving youth orchestra program.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have
● outstanding conducting talent
● strong musicianship and leadership skills
● extensive knowledge of orchestral literature, especially repertoire well suited for youth orchestras
● the ability to work cooperatively with the PVS Music Director, Managing Director, Board of Directors, parent and other volunteers, and the Youth Orchestra Steering Committee on all matters related to the Pioneer Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra
● the ability to work well with young musicians.

Additional information: The new PVSYO Conductor may also be considered for a joint appointment as Assistant Conductor of the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra. The PVSO (http://www.pvsoc.org/) is one of the leading musical organizations in western Massachusetts, with an orchestra of about 80 members and a yearly schedule of 5-6 subscription concerts plus annual Educational Concerts. Led by Music Director Paul Phillips since 1994, the PVSO is now in its 77th season and rehearses weekly on Wednesday evenings in Hadley, Massachusetts, from September through May. The PVS Chorus, established in 1961 as the resident choir of the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, has about 80 members and usually performs 2-3 concerts with the orchestra each season plus additional choral concerts.

Applicants for the position of Pioneer Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra Conductor are invited to indicate whether they are interested in the additional post of PVSO Assistant Conductor, since these positions may be combined. Applicants with backgrounds in choral conducting should also describe their experience in this area.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
