9th International Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Masterclass in Mikkeli, Finland June 27-July 1, 2016 with St Michel Strings chamber orchestra

Six participants will get an intense masterclass experience over five days in Mikkeli, Finland, working with maestro Sasha Mäkilä and St Michel Strings chamber orchestra. The course consists of three rehearsals and a public concert in the beautiful Mikaeli concert hall as well as feedback sessions every day after the rehearsal. Each participant will enjoy a minimum of 20 minutes daily podium time with the orchestra, plus the concert on July 1. The repertoire consists of string orchestra core repertoire, and the focus of the masterclass will be conducting technique and communication skills with the orchestra. Participants are allowed to videotape all the sessions. All participants are recommended to bring their instrument and join the orchestra during the rehearsals as well as in concert.

What makes this masterclass special is the presence of maestro Valery Gergiev, since the masterclass will take place exactly during the XXV Gergiev Festival Mikkeli. The participants will have access to all rehearsals of Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and there is also a possibility to attend some of the festival concerts provided there are free seats left. The soloists on this year’s festival include such international stars as pianists Alexander Toradze and Denis Matsuev.

The course fee will be 620 EUR total, consisting of a 100 EUR reservation fee and the remaining 520 EUR to be paid before or on the first day of the masterclass. There will be a limited number of places for passive participants who will be willing to play in the masterclass orchestra.

N.B. This is the holiday season in Mikkeli and there will be a lot of music tourists in town for the Gergiev festival. Act fast because the hotels and hostels will be full! Remember to check Airbnb and Couchsurfing too. Share rooms with other participants if possible.
