Job Summary
The Music Area of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Angelo State University seeks to fill the position of Visiting Artist/Instructor of Music/Director of Orchestra. This full-time interim position calls for an individual with a commitment to undergraduate Music education with the ability to supervise and direct the activities of a growing university Orchestra program.

Teach, conduct and administer the University Symphony, Chamber Strings, Beginning String Orchestra, and Applied Strings Studio (violin, viola, cello and double bass) Programs. Recruit and retain instrumental musicians for all ensembles within the Music Area to include active marketing and promotion of the strings program. Assist in building a strong contingent of string majors for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Teach String Techniques for Music Majors. Perform on one or more of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello or double bass. Support and attend university-recruiting events.

Associated Duties: Work closely with the Director of Bands to plan appropriate use of space and equipment. Work closely with the Director of International Studies to meet the needs of International students. Provide musical support for university events. Establish and maintain a high profile and positive presence in the community, public schools, and surrounding area. Develop and promote programs to support the arts within the community.
Maintain a successful record of scholarly/creative endeavor, service activities, and teaching responsibilities as defined by the needs of the department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualified candidates must possess: strong communication and organizational skills; demonstrated skills in musicianship and rehearsal techniques; demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher of strings on the university level, be committed to the recruitment and retention of students, have the ability to work collaboratively and collegially within a university

Minimal Qualifications: Master’s Degree in strings or related field, Expertise in string instrument pedagogy (violin, viola, cello and double bass). Experience in the following areas: conducting; teaching applied violin, viola, cello and double bass; managing inventory and budget.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred: Doctorate of Music or ABD in music (strings).

Also preferred: experience conducting public school orchestras at all levels (beginning through high school), and/or experience conducting collegiate and community orchestras.
