Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive

January 12 – 15, 2017

Hosted on the campus of Malibu High School and the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Brothers Studios, the inaugural Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive event will be a four day workshop that focuses on the craft of conducting, designed for composers of media. This course will cover topics ranging from baton technique, body movement, working with clicks, using streamers and much more, all to help you be a confident and effective leader on the podium. Not only will fellows have the opportunity to study and conduct great repertoire but each chosen fellow will prepare their own cue to conduct and record with full orchestra on the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Brothers Studios.

The workshop will have two sessions with musicians each day, with the final session held at the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Brothers Studios.  Each session is designed to allow the participant an opportunity to expand upon previous sessions and will lead to the applying previously learned lessons to conducting their own composition. Each conductor will be allocated 15 minutes of podium time for each session.  The workshop will be limited to 12 fellows and no more than 8 auditors.

Repertoire for the workshop will include:

  • Star Wars Suite for Orchestra by John Williams (Hal Leonard)

  • A Prayer for Peace (Avner’s Theme) by John Williams (Hal Leonard)

  • TBD (to be provided by LAFCI)

  • YOUR composition

This workshop has two levels of participation:

1. Fellow

  • Work hands on with faculty members

  • Participation in all sessions and events

  • 15 minutes of podium time during each session

    • first day with piano

    • second day with string quartet

    • third day with chamber ensemble

    • fourth day with 62 – piece full studio orchestra

  • Work with some of Los Angeles’ finest musicians

  • Conduct and record YOUR cue at the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Brothers Studios

2. Auditor

  • Participation in all discussions and events

  • No podium time

Fee: $500

All accepted fellows will receive a digital file of their sessions on the podium along with a signed certificate of completion at the end of the workshop.
