Education: Master’s Degree or equivalent professional experience preferred. Experience: Minimum of five years’ experience in music education, or in leading a full orchestra. Candidate must have proven ability to exercise leadership in developing the total artistic quality of an orchestra. Must inspire and relate well to young adult students.
Position Summary: The Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra has established itself as a leader in Lee County and all of Southwest Florida for extracurricular music education and performance opportunities for students. Currently, the 110 members of the Youth Orchestra program represent public, private, charter and home schools. The program consists of the Youth Symphony (advanced full orchestra), the Concert Orchestra (intermediate full orchestra) and the Sinfonietta (string orchestra). The program also has five chamber ensembles comprised of students from the large ensembles. The Youth Symphony is an audition based ensemble as a pre-professional training orchestra, open to advanced students. The Youth Orchestra program has an age cap of 22 years old. All ensembles of the Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra rehearse on Monday evenings from September through May at Florida Southwestern College in Fort Myers, FL. Each ensemble performs four concerts each season. Concerts and fundraising activities are generally on weekends to avoid school conflicts. Students will regularly take part in sectional coaching with professional musicians from the Southwest Florida Symphony. Members of the Youth Orchestra program are eligible to compete in the annual Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition with the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Youth Symphony.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as conductor for the Youth Symphony (YS) ensemble.
Rehearse the ensemble at its regular Monday rehearsals and conduct all performances (usually 4 – 5) during the course of the September – May season. Youth Symphony Conductor Job Description
Determine season repertoire for the YS in collaboration with the Education Director
Serve on the adjudication committee for YO entrance and seating auditions in May, August/September and January and assist in determining placements and seating in the orchestra with the committee and YO staff.
Serve on the adjudication committee for annual YO Concerto Competition.
Maintain effective communication with YO members, parents, coaches, and staff including: Communicating rehearsal notes, instrumentation, equipment and library needs to the Education Director for distribution to members.
Assist in the development and implementation of a recruitment program in the local community through all schools and their music instructors.
Designate possible guests artists for YS concert programs with budget considerations
Assist in fund raising efforts and developing relationships with local and state governments, music organizations, and patrons and potential patrons, which relationships are intended to increase the exposure, opportunities and funding of the YO program.
Assist the Education Director in playing a visible and active role in the community; helps develop the overall public image of the orchestra in the community and beyond. Speak publicly when called upon to do so as an advocate for the Youth Orchestra, Southwest Florida Symphony and music education and provide leadership in the arts community as related to music education for youth.
Meet with the Education Director and YO staff to coordinate the events, policies and artistic direction of the orchestras.
Stay abreast of new literature and concert concepts to recommend to the Education Director.
Stay abreast of artistic activities in the youth orchestra field; recommend to the Education Director new activities that may advance the orchestra’s objectives.
Collaborate with the Education Director and Artistic Administrator in developing longrange artistic plans for the orchestra such as: subscription concerts, special concerts, chamber ensemble programs, tours, etc.
Attend Education Committee meetings as possible and provide reports as needed.
