Job Summary/Basic Function: The Director of Opera will effectively collaborate with other members of the opera team, including musical and production staff, voice faculty, and designers, to foster a nurturing and creative opera program and curriculum. The job responsibilities include: 1) serving as director of the Crane Opera Ensemble, including stage direction of full productions and scene programs; 2) teaching courses in performing techniques, directing, opera history, and others related to the candidate’s expertise; 3) overseeing and administering aspects of production, budget, hiring and contracting of guest designers and other personnel; 4) managing the Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize; and 5) coordinating opera outreach activities. The Director of Opera will be expected to maintain an appropriate level of professional activity and service, and to work to promote the reputation of the Crane Opera Ensemble at the national level.
Job Requirements & Essential Functions of the Job:
Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will 1) possess a Master’s degree in a voice or opera-related field with demonstrated experience and success as a stage director; 2) have experience in a teaching/mentorship role to young singers in a university opera setting, or equivalent professional experience; 3) have knowledge of standard operatic and musical theatre repertoire and style, as well as interest in fostering contemporary opera; and 4) possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues and have demonstrated a commitment to creating, fostering and sustaining an inclusive environment in and out of the classroom
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates whose qualifications include: 1) earned doctorate/terminal degree in a voice or opera-related field OR an equivalent combination of professional experience and education; 2) demonstrated experience and effectiveness in managing productions and overseeing budgets; 3) significant experience in a leadership role in a university opera setting, or equivalent professional experience; 4) exemplary communication skills and evidence of collaboration with others within a university setting and beyond; 5) interest in and aptitude for cultivating donor relationships and fostering successful external partnerships; and 6) engagement in professional development activities enhancing knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion, working collaboratively across various units in fostering success of underrepresented groups and a supportive and inclusive environment for all. The ideal candidate will be an artist of the highest level, an inspiring and energetic leader, and a music educator committed to fostering technical and artistic growth in developing musicians.
