Job Summary

The FIU School of Music (SOM) is comprised of 240 students and 50 full-time and part-time faculty. The SOM offers B.M. and M.M. degrees in composition, performance, music business, and music technology; a B.A. degree in Music; and a B.M. and M.S. in music education. The SOM produces and presents a full performance calendar in the Herbert & Nicole Performing Arts Center on FIU’s main campus and throughout the South Florida community. The School of Music is one of the eight integrated units of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, including the departments of Theatre, Art + Art History, Communication Arts, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design, the School of Journalism, and Mass Communication. CARTA has 200 faculty and staff members and 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Position Description: The FIU School of Music invites applicants for a nine-month, tenure earning Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies.

 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable experience conducting professional orchestras at national and/or international level
  • A terminal degree, preferably a DMA in Orchestral Conducting, is required for this position
  • Evidence of excellence in college, or university-level teaching

 

Responsibilities include conducting the FIU Symphony Orchestra, teaching Symphonic Literature, and undergraduate & graduate conducting courses.  As Director of the FIU Symphony Orchestra, he/she will also act as a liaison to their counterparts in the community and region, recruiting local, national, and international undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to be an active and effective recruiter for the String and Wind Studies programs, the graduate Orchestral Conducting program, and be dedicated to the growth of the FIU Symphony Orchestra. The successful candidate will also maintain a regional and national profile within the profession and engage in scholarly, creative activity, and research. The salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
