Conducting Overview

The Oberlin in Italy Conducting Program is designed for aspiring conductors with special focus on Italian operatic repertoire, language and style.

Conducting applicants are considered for two tracks:

Assistant Conductor and Apprentice Conductor.

Assistant and Apprentice Conductor tracks and duties are assigned based on portfolio, CV, and reference materials review, submitted by an international pool of applicants.

Conducting Program Highlights

  • Develop Italian language, musical style, knowledge of repertoire, conducting, and coaching skills with internationally renowned artists, and native Italian speakers

  • Hands on experience working with the internationally distinguished faculty conductors, collaborative pianists, coaches, voice teachers, and stage directors.

  • Learn the major arias, ensembles, and other repertoire expected for auditions

  • Weekly private lessons and coachings

  • Weekly group seminars and classes

  • Participate in workshops and masterclasses with faculty to develop a fuller mind body connection to Italianate musical style, breathing and phrasing.

    • Master class and workshop topics include:

      • Recitativo in Mozart

      • Bel Canto style

      • Orchestral colors from the keyboard

      • Elements of Conducting

      • Score reading

  • Prepare for your upcoming engagements and auditions

    • Focus on audition repertoire, stylistic demands, what to expect, and how to prepare for the next level of your development and career.

  • Participate in Physical & Vocal Characterization, and Movement Workshops to more fully undertand the singing actor’s instrument and process

  • Conductors with high level piano skills will be considered for performance opportunities including Master Class, select concert, and opera scene accompaniment assignments.

  • Conductors with high level instrumental skills will be considered for opera orchestra assignments.

  • Intensive Italian Language Study

    • 15 hours weekly.

    • This is a unique Italian language course that is designed by the Accademia Britannica specifically for Oberlin in Italy with the developing opera professional in mind.

    • Prepare to be fluent and conversational in professional operatic contexts.

  • Earn 2 transferable music elective credits, with the successful completion of division assignments

Assistant and Apprentice Conductor tracks:

Placement in the Conducting program Assistant orApprentice track, and repertoire assignments are based on international auditions in early 2017.  Please see the details below.

Assistant

Generally at the young professional, post graduate level.

Graduate level conducting students of exceptional talent and ability will be considered.

3 assistantships are offered each year to exceptionally talented Conductors.

Assistantships provide: housing, all program activities, and a $1,000 stipend.

Travel to and from Arezzo and meals are not covered.

In addition to weekly coachings, workshops and masterclasses with the Oberlin in Italy faculty, Assistant Conductors are assigned a part-time staff conducting load of rehearsal and performance preparation and conducting including the following:

  • Assistant Conductor for one mainstage opera production: L’elisir d’amore, L’incoronazione di Poppea or Suor Angelica

  • Conductor for one Site-Specific Opera production (a 90 minute reduction): Alcina, Il Mondo della Luna, or Così fan tutte

  • Assistant Conductors may also be assigned Emerging Artist Scenes conducting as needed.

Apprentice

Generally at the graduate level. Undergraduate level aspiring conductors of exceptional talent and ability will be considered.

3 Apprentice Conductors will be chosen for this tuition-based program of study.

$3,500 Tuition includes housing and all program activities.

In addition to weekly coachings, workshops and masterclasses with the Oberlin in Italy faculty, Apprentice Conductors are assigned performance-based learning opportunities including the following:

  • Second Assistant Conductor for one mainstage opera production: L’elisir d’amore, L’incoronazione di Poppea or Suor Angelica

  • Assistant Conductor for one Site-Specific Opera production (a 90 minute reduction): Alcina, Il Mondo della Luna, or Così fan tutte

  • Conductor or Assistant Conductor for Emerging Artist Opera Scenes

Conducting Audition Guidelines

Typical Schedule

Monday – Friday

  • 10:00am – 1:00pm – Italian Language Class (Week 1 thru Week 4)

  • 1:00pm – 2:00pm – Lunch break, practice time

  • 2:00pm – 9:00pm – Voice Lessons, Coachings, Workshops, and Musical & Staging Rehearsals for Opera Productions

Saturday

  • 10:00am – 1:00pm Master Classes, Workshops, and Musical & Staging Rehearsals for Opera Productions

  • 1:00 – 2:00pm Lunch break, practice time

  • 2:00pm – 9:00pm Master Classes, Workshops, and Musical & Staging Rehearsals for Opera Productions

Sunday

Some Sundays are days off, some sundays are Tech rehearsals and / or performances.
