As the fall semester draws to a close and we take a moment to reconnect with family and friends, I’m pausing to think of the exciting work we have done this year and of bringing new projects to fruition. I’m writing you now about one of these important projects, asking you to consider an end-of-year donation to the Steven Stucky Memorial Residency for New Music.
As you know, we lost our friend and colleague in February. We want to honor Steve’s memory with an endowment to bring world-class musicians to work with our composition and performing students each year. Steve was a tireless advocate for new music and knew the high standards of musicianship that current works demand.
His students relate Steve’s multiple influences—musical, professional, personal—on their lives and careers in the most glowing terms:
“…first and foremost a caring mentor…” (James Matheson, award-winning composer and recent director of Los Angeles Philharmonic Innovative Composers Fellowship Program)
“…a deeply generous and thoughtful teacher.…His ear—his way—was all elegance and warmth.” (Anna Weesner, Chair, Music Department, University of Pennsylvania)
“His daily example of synergy between one’s walks of life—artist, musician, thinker, professor, mentor, colleague, parent, friend—is one that has affected me profoundly.” (Sean Shepherd, recent Guggenheim Fellow andDaniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow of the Cleveland Orchestra)
“The five years I spent studying with Steven left an indelible impression on me….His attitude toward the creation of art remains a daily inspiration.” (Jesse Jones, winner of the Elliott Carter Rome Prize, Assistant Professor of Composition, Oberlin College & Conservatory)
“Founding a resident new music ensemble in his name would ensure his extraordinary legacy is upheld for generations to come.” (Christopher Stark, Assistant Professor of Composition, Washington University in St. Louis)
We hope that you will consider making a contribution to this fund, honoring Steve’s generosity with your own.
