BCO Summer Conducting Seminar with Markand Thakar Baltimore, MD, June 9-19, 2017
Under the direction of renowned pedagogue Markand Thakar, the 2017 BCO Summer Conducting Seminar focuses on building musicianship and technical control. Held on the campus of the Peabody Conservatory, the 11-day Summer Conducting Seminar offers 10 Fellows the opportunity to conduct the internationally acclaimed Baltimore Chamber Orchestra in orchestral works by Dvorak, Brahms and Mendelssohn, and – with members of BCO – smaller works by Stravinsky, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Schubert.
Fellows will have 25 minutes of daily conducting time (including three sessions with the BCO, two with the Stravinsky L’Histoire du Soldat ensemble, and nine with a one-per-part ensemble), plus daily individual video reviews and two daily technique sessions. Each morning the breakfast conversations with Maestro Thakar cover topics musical and practical.
Henry Fogel, preeminent among American orchestra administrators, will be in residence. Mr. Fogel will oversee a Career Day, consisting of mock interviews for music director, assistant conductor, and academic conducting positions. Seminar conductors will participate on both sides of the interview process, as well as in reviewing the interviews. Mr. Fogel will also provide individual career counseling for all participants.
The Seminar begins with five days of Boot Camp: building technical control, and exploring the fundamental issues of music making: how single lines, progressions, phrases, and ultimately whole movements can be unfolded in the most musical way; followed by hands-on experience with the building blocks of musical form: Theme and Variations, Fugues, and Sonata Form.
L’Histoire Day offers a focus on mixed meters, and the final Orchestra component offers three days of conducting the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra in music by Dvorak, Brahms and Mendelssohn.
Associates participate fully in all activities outside of conducting the ensembles.
Deadline for Fellow applications: April 1, 2017
(Associate applications will continue to be accepted.)
Fees: $50 non-refundable application fee; Fellows $2600; Associates $1300
It was more than a musical approach to the conductor’s duty, more than a theoretical explanation of why do we exist as conductors, for me it was a philosophical moment to think on music as a lifestyle. Each day there was a new goal to achieve, and new issues to resolve, from our mind and from our bodies, everything together in order to ‘be the music’ and let the music be itself. It was absolutely an inspiring experience.

It opened my ears to a whole new world of sound and listening. It was hard, but worth it…this is a fantastic course with a world-class teacher.
