JOB SUMMARY: The Philharmonia Orchestra conductor is responsible and accountable for ensuring that NOYO’s full symphonic orchestra (primarily grades 9-12) provides a high quality orchestral training experience for the young musicians of Northern Ohio. The conductor, in collaboration with the Artistic Director, will develop programming suitable for the orchestra and ultimately further the mission of the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading weekly rehearsals (Sundays from 4-7PM, late August through March) at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with an additional weekly preparation and communication with General Manager and Executive Director.

  • Developing the season calendar in collaboration with the Executive/Artistic Director to include concert dates, rehearsal schedule, outreach performances, and tours.

  • Preparing three (3) concerts per year (October, January, and March) including any additional outreach or tour performances.

  • Selecting repertoire appropriate for the orchestra and making effective use of all available orchestra personnel.

  • Communicating in a timely manner with the General Manager and Executive Director about weekly orchestra rehearsals.

  • Preparing performance materials including bowings, markings, edits, and any necessary transpositions.

  • Create and maintain seating assignments for strings, winds, and percussion

  • Judging the annual concerto competition.

  • Mentoring assistant conductor by providing guidance and performance opportunities when appropriate.

  • Developing a working relationship with area school and community music educators.

  • Assisting in recruiting and auditioning orchestra members.

  • Adhering to orchestra’s budget as set forth by the Executive Director.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a conductor and educator.

  • Preferred Master’s degree in orchestral conducting, Music Education, or Music Performance or equivalent experience.

  • Experience teaching and conducting large youth ensembles.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills; maintain a good relationship with parents; demand a high standard of excellence while creating an encouraging, inspiring, and engaging youth orchestra experience.

  • Successful completion of a background check is required for the selected candidate

Salary: Commensurate with the candidate’s experience and previous affiliation with the youth orchestra profession. (Current salary – $7,210)

Video demonstrating 10 minutes of rehearsal and 10 minutes of performance will be required at the request of the search committee after applications are reviewed.

Organization: The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras (NOYO) exist to provide a progressive orchestra program with challenging educational musical opportunities in orchestra and small ensemble training and performing for young instrumentalists under the guidance of professional musicians, using the resources of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras has been providing outstanding orchestral training to the youth of Northern Ohio since 1969. NOYO is a regional orchestral training program that attracts gifted young musicians ages 8-22 spanning a geographic area from Toledo to Cleveland. NOYO is comprised of three performing  ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra, a pre-collegiate full symphonic orchestra primarily grade levels 9-12; the Symphonetta Strings, an intermediate level strings-only orchestra primarily grade levels 5-9; and the Rhythm & Brass, an advanced high-school level brass and percussion ensemble drawn from the Philharmonia Orchestra’s brass and percussion section.
