Assistant Conductor Auditions
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (FWSO) seeks a fully-trained and dynamic conductor to serve as assistant to the FWSO Music Director as well as cover conductor for the Music Director, Pops conductors, and guest conductors for all orchestra services. The Assistant Conductor will lead education, family, and community concerts in addition to other conducting and administrative duties as specified by the Music Director and Artistic Operations department. Candidates must possess meaningful orchestral conducting experience, a broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire and concert programming, be fluent in English and willing to relocate to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate an ability to deliver dialogs (memorized or on the spot) to audiences. This appointment will be no less than two years.
About the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is one of the most successful orchestras in the United States, performing an impressive 200 concerts each year for an audience of 200,000 adults and children from all walks of life. Over the last 16 seasons, Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya has transformed the Orchestra into an ensemble that is admired the world over for its artistic excellence and commitment to community engagement. As the principal resident company of the acoustically-superb Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall, the Orchestra performs a broad range of symphonic and pops concerts. The FWSO is recognized nationally for the strength and uniqueness of its collaborations with other organizations including the Fort Worth Opera, Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Texas Ballet Theater, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Master Chorale, and the Children’s Education Program of Bass Performance Hall. The Orchestra’s annual summer music festival, Concerts in the Garden, has grown to be one of the largest and most successful summer outdoor festivals of its kind in Texas, attracting an annual audience of nearly 45,000. The FWSO is a 46-week orchestra with an annual budget of $12 million and an endowment of $23 million.
- Assist and provide support to Music Director and all guest conductors
- Serve as cover conductor for the Music Director, Pops conductors and guest conductors for all services.
- Collaborate with Director of Education and VP of Artistic Operations in programming of education and community concerts.
- Conduct FWSO Education, community and other concerts as assigned.
- Assist with administrative duties relating to education, community engagement, and audience development.
- Completed training in conducting
- Orchestral conducting experience
- Broad knowledge of symphonic repertoire and concert programming

- Exceptional organizational skills and time management ability
Salary commensurate with experience.

Appointment will be no less than two years.
Individuals should submit a cover letter, current resume, two letters of recommendation, and contact information for three professional references. Candidates are also required to submit of video samples demonstrating their recent work. This should include (at the minimum) two contrasting repertoire styles. Video should be shot at close range of the conductor, taken from orchestra’s vantage point, facing the FRONT of the conductor, of either a rehearsal or performance with full symphonic or large chamber orchestral ensemble. Videos must be sent electronically with links and dates of performances (Youtube, Vimeo, etc.).
ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEBRUARY 8, 2017.
Initial applicants will be notified by February 20, 2017, if they have been selected as a finalist. Finalists will conduct the FWSO and interview with FWSO Administration on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. Travel, accommodations, meals, and all related expenses are the sole responsibility of each candidate.
