The National Orchestra of Lorraine (ONL) is a mixed union founded by the City of Metz and the Regional Council in 1976. It is supported by the City of Metz, the Greater East Region and the State.

As a national orchestra recognized and supported by the State (Ministry of Culture and Communication, DRAC Grand Est), the ONL undertakes to respect the list of missions and tasks for the national network of orchestras in Region in view of the renewal of the national orchestra label, as defined by the texts resulting from the LCAP law of 7 July 2016.

It has 72 permanent musicians.

Spurred different music directors appointed him head and the later, Jacques Mercier, it addresses a more varied repertoire consisting of works from the XVIII th to XXI th century. He also attaches great importance to contemporary creation and to French music.

The ONL, which has its own rehearsal venue, is in permanent residence at the Arsenal of Metz and is part of the dynamics of a new Music City of Metz.

Indeed, EPCC Metz en Scènes (regrouping the Arsenal, the Trinitarians and the BAM) and the ONL are engaged in a process of rapprochement and convergence of missions of general interest, To develop and implement a common cultural and artistic project, particularly in the symphonic field (joint programming, co-residencies of composers, invitations, international opening …) and in cultural action (opening to new audiences, , Artistic and cultural education, etc.).

In the lyric field, the ONL collaborates, within the framework of a convention, to the productions of the Opéra Théâtre de Metz Métropole.

A genuine ambassador for the cultural life of Metz and the Grand Est region, the ONL radiates not only in its home region and in the Greater Region (Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg) but also in France and abroad.


GENERAL MISSION                                        

 > The Musical Director defines, in liaison and with the approval of the Director General of the ONL, the programming of the seasons (programs, soloists, conductors and guest chefs) in the Framework of the artistic budget. This programming must take account of the territorial context in which it takes place. He or she strives to promote the invitation of conductors (s) and soloists with respect for diversity.

> He / she writes his / her proposals in the continuity of the artistic identity of the orchestra. He / she is also able to propose innovative artistic and cultural projects, conducive to the renewal of repertoires and audiences.

> In the framework of the Cité musicale de Metz, under the authority of the director general, he / she participates in the symphonic programming of the Arsenal in consultation with the artistic delegate of the Arsenal.

> He / she takes into account the public service mission of a national orchestra operating in a given territory (Metz and the Grand Est region): cultural action, public renewal, relations with the public and private partners of the territory …

> He / she represents the NLO with the media and institutional and private partners.

> As conductor, he / she ensures at least one third of the activity of the ONL, in harmonious beaches within each season (concerts, lyrical productions and phonographic and / or audiovisual captations) , And participates in its pedagogical actions.

> He / she guarantees the artistic quality of the ONL, as well as its maintenance at a musical level of excellence.

> He / she contributes to the national and international influence of the ONL.

> Fluency in the French language is desired at the time of taking office.

Candidates selected after a pre-selection will be required to write and present to a Recruitment Board a note of intent relating to their artistic and cultural project and the means necessary for its implementation, A strategic plan.

The jury will be composed of the President of the ONL, the director general of the ONL, two qualified personalities, one of whom will be the president of the jury, two representatives from each of the orchestra’s funders (City, Region, State) And two representatives of the musicians.

Successful applicants will have one month to write their project.

A specific information package may be provided to applicants upon request.

The candidate selected by the jury will be nominated by the President for validation to the Technical Committee and then to the Trade Union Committee of the ONL.
