Musikato International, in collaboration with the Department of Music at Glendale Community College, is pleased to announce the 2017 Conducting Workshop. Maestro Neil Thomson, one of the most widely-respected and versatile British conductors will lead the highly anticipated workshop.
Maestro Thomson was Head of Conducting Program at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. He is the youngest-ever incumbent of this post in 1992 – 2006. He was made an Honorary Member of the RCM in 1994 for his excellent services to the institution and for his an enviable reputation as an orchestral conducting teacher and conductor.
Maestro Thomson is one of the best conducting mentors throughout Europe. He has served as Guest Professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Krakow Academy of Music, the Conservatoire “Arrigo Boito” in Parma and the Lithuanian Academy of Music. In 2002, he was invited by Lorin Maazel to be on the jury for the European rounds of the Maazel Conducting Competition in 2007. He was on the jury alongside with Gunther Schuller at the Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition in Mexico City.
Neil Thomson currently serves as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquestra Filarmonica de Goias in Brazil since March 2014. He has conducted orchestras all over the world including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. In May 2005, he was invited to conduct the 50th Anniversary Memorial Concert for George Enescu with the Romanian National Orchestra.
He has made successful débuts with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto, the WDR Rundfunkorchester, Koln, the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, the Ulster Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the Britten Sinfonia, the Lahti Symphony orchestra and the Nordic Youth Orchestra.
He has performed with many distinguished soloists including Sir James Galway, Dame Moura Lympany, Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Felicity Lott, Philip Langridge, Sarah Chang, Antonio Meneses Steven Isserlis, Julian Lloyd Webber, David Geringas, Natalie Clein, Ittai Shapira, Gyorgy Pauk, Brett Dean, Jean-Philippe Collard, Stephen Hough, Peter Jablonski, and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Recent collaborations include a Schumann Cello Concerto with Steven Isserlis, an opera gala with Danielle de Niese, a tour in Brazil with Antonio Meneses, Liszt Second Piano Concerto and Brahms Second Piano Concerto with Stephen Hough, the premiere of Joseph Phibb’s new Percussion Concerto with Dame Evelyn Glennie and a rare performance of the complete Incidental Music from ‘Hassan’ by Delius at the Cheltenham Festival. Recordings include a disc of American contemporary music with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Second Piano Concerto with Alexander Gavrylyuk and the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and a disc of orchestral music by Cesar Guerra-Peixe with the Orquestra Filarmonica de Goias.
Born in 1966, Neil Thomson studied with Norman Del Mar at the Royal College of Music in London and later at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Kurt Sanderling.
Conductors of all ages are welcome to apply for this opportunity to study with Maestro Thomson, and conduct an all-professional orchestra in a weeklong workshop culminating in a final concert.
Fellows and Associates will work with full orchestra and string quintet.
