COLIN METTERS INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING MASTERCLASS 2017
31 March – 5 April 2017; Yehudi Menuhin School (near London, UK)
The sixth annual Colin Metters International Conducting Masterclass will once again be held in the beautiful settling of the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey. All those involved are resident with full board and enjoy both the musical intensity the course offers plus the chance to relax and socialise together.
The masterclass, designed for those with some conducting experience, provides a rare opportunity to work with Colin Metters, Professor Emeritus of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London and one of the world’s foremost conducting pedagogues. Through his unique and personal approach to teaching and mentoring, Colin Metters generates an atmosphere that combines intensity of study with a mutually supportive and creative environment.
Students work with two professional and experienced pianists and an ensemble formed from members of the class. A string quintet of professional players from London’s leading symphony orchestras will join the ensemble for two days of the masterclass. The daily curriculum covers: in depth score and music study; conducting technique; rehearsal skills; the ability to convey musical intention through gesture and influence all aspects of musical performance. Before supper there will be open discussion and analysis of the day’s work.
Auditors will have access to all teaching sessions and can participate in discussions and workshops; they will have an opportunity to conduct at some point during the week and receive feedback from Colin Metters. Places are limited and may be filled before the application deadline. Early application is advised for active participants.
Compulsory repertoire for all participants:
Brahms Piano Concerto No 1
Schubert Symphony No 5 (complete)
Stravinsky Dumbarton Oaks (with two pianos)
Dvorak Slavonic Dances Op. 46 Nos 5-8
