1st Hong Kong International Conducting Competition

  • The official orchestra of the competition Hong Kong Sinfonietta will be playing in all rounds.

  • All competition rounds will be held at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall in Central.

  • A maximum of 18 candidates (with 3 backup candidates) will be selected from the preliminary selection round and will be announced in mid-July 2017. For the schedule of the competition, click here.


The competition is open to conductors of any nationality born on or after 11 January 1982.

Application for Preliminary Selection

Please download and complete the Application Form and submit it on or before 19 June 2017 along with the following:

  • a photocopy of current passport page showing nationality and date of birth. Candidates from Hong Kong please submit a photocopy of Hong Kong Identity Card;
  • a photo taken in the last 3 months;
  • 2 recent videos of your orchestral conducting (piano reduction will not be accepted) in:
    i) rehearsal and/or
    ii) performance, preferably showing different styles and periods,
    iii) the videos should be within 30 minutes in total; and
  • a self-introduction video (within 2 minutes)

You may submit the video materials by sending us a DVD, a USB drive, a memory card, or via a download link.

Application Fee

There is no application fee for the competition.

Travel and Accommodations

Candidates will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses.

Hotel accommodation will be provided during the period of the competition from 9 to 15 January 2018 (inclusive).

Visa Arrangements

According to Hong Kong Immigration law, non-Hong Kong candidates will need a work visa to participate in the competition. The organizer will use its best endeavours to obtain work visas for the candidates.


Round 1 (a maximum of 18 candidates)
1. Beethoven: Egmont Overture, Op 84
2. One of the following overtures, to be determined by a draw on 9 January 2018:

  • Weber : Der Freischütz Overture
  • Rossini : The Barber of Seville Overture

Round 2 – Semi-Finals (a maximum of 8 semi-finalists)
1. Bartók : Divertimento
2. Chopin :  Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor, Op 21: II Larghetto

*Soloist: Colleen Lee (HKS Artist Associate 2010-2011)

3. One of the following symphonies, to be determined by a draw on 10 January 2018:

  • Beethoven : Symphony No 5 in C minor, Op 67
  • Brahms : Symphony No 3 in F, Op 90
  • Schumann : Symphony No 1 in B-flat, Op 38, “Spring”

Round 3 – Finals (a maximum of 3 finalists)
1. Chan Hing-yan (HKS Artist Associate 2016-2018) : November Leonids – for Orchestra
2. One of the following symphonies, to be chosen by the candidates by 12 January 2018:

  • Beethoven :  Symphony No 5 in C minor, Op 67
  • Brahms :  Symphony No 3 in F, Op 90
  • Schumann :  Symphony No 1 in B-flat, Op 38, “Spring”

3. The finalists will also be invited to make a short presentation to the audience.


  • Submitted application materials (including the recordings) will not be returned.
  • All competition rounds will be documented for archival and promotional purposes.  Photographs, audio and visual recordings may be printed in publications or broadcast on TV, radio, or the internet.  By joining the competition, candidates agree to waive any rights relating to the participation in the competition, including all visual, audio and application materials.
  • The jury reserves the rights to disqualify any applicant who provides untruthful, misleading or inaccurate information or materials, or breaches any of the terms and conditions of the competition.
  • The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the details of the competition.
