Sympoisum – Maestro Alan Gilbert – New York Philharmonic

Friday, May 19, 2017
David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall)
Lincoln Center
New York, NY

Maestro Alan Gilbert is widely known for his strong connection to new compositions, and composers, and has led some of the most interesting new music programs available with the outstanding New York Philharmonic. Celebrating his final season as music director of the New York Philharmonic, Gilbert will give the New York Premiere of Composer-in-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Wing on Wing, alongside Artist-in-Residence Leonidas Kavakos in Brahms’s Violin Concerto, and the New York Premiere of Aeriality by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, the second Kravis Emerging Composer, an honor introduced during Alan Gilbert’s tenure; and an exploration of how music can effect positive change in the world.

Join Maestro Gilbert and members of the Conductors Guild in this Symposium for a day to focus on repertoire. We begin the day with registration at the home of the New York Philharmonic, David Geffen Hall, in the beautiful surrounds of Lincoln Center, followed by attendance at an Open Rehearsal of the NY Philharmonic in David Geffen Hall.

Following the rehearsal, we will join Maestro Gilbert for lunch and a one-on-one group discussion about his most interesting and most-liked performances of new works. Participating conductors will be expected to participate in this knowledge-filled discussion by bringing their questions and comments regarding new repertoire and its performance.

Additional plans are being arranged for Friday afternoon. Then, dinner on your own.  Participants must arrange for their own ticket for the evening performance.
