new application due date as 4/15

The School of the Arts at Purchase College, SUNY seeks candidates for the faculty position of Conductor of the Purchase Symphony Orchestra, beginning August 2017. The appointment will be a non-tenure track, part-time, renewable appointment at an appropriate rank (Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice in Music, etc.) for the qualifications of the chosen applicant. Salary is commensurate with experience. Applicants to this position must be excellent conductors, outstanding teachers, and able leaders interested in shaping the future of classical music.

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra serves as the primary large ensemble learning experience for instrumentalists in the classical division of the Conservatory of Music. It meets twice weekly, on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, and presents eight (8) annual concerts including opera productions, choral works, and an aural/visual experimental series called the Purchase Orchestra Electric.

The Conductor will be responsible for building and managing the orchestra, and thus function as its primary custodian, or instructor of record. S/he will work with the Director of the Conservatory and its classical faculty to determine repertoire & schedule, identify pedagogical needs, and develop strategies to meet them. As with all higher education classical instrumental programs, recruitment of qualified applicants and enrollees is essential to a healthy orchestra. Part of the contractual obligation of the Conductor will be to serve as an eager and active recruiter of students, including, but not limited to, working with youth ensembles throughout the state (NY) and region (NJ/CT), managing runout performances, and to build partnerships and feeder systems from outstanding music programs.

Contractual responsibilities will consist of conducting a minimum of five (5) concerts during the academic year (end of August to the beginning of May), teaching two classroom courses: Conducting Techniques (in the fall semester) and Conducting Strategies (in the spring semester), and actively recruiting students on behalf of the Conservatory of Music as assigned and approved by the Director of the Conservatory.

Our ideal candidate will have interests and experience that extend beyond his or her specialty, strong collaboration skills, the ability to effectively communicate and engage various communities and stakeholders, and the ability to encompass broader approaches to art practice and human knowledge.
