EL SISTEMA – CORO, VENEZUELA – A Conductors Guild Workshop for Conductors and Music Educators

2017 Conductors Guild – El Sistema Coro

Conductor Training Workshop for Music Educators

June 12-16, 2017

The Conductors Guild is excited to offer a workshop especially dedicated to Music Educators willing to expand their conducting experience under the guidance of internationally renowned master faculty Maestros John Farrer and Raymond Harvery by working in the heart of one the most advanced and established Núcleos of Venezuelan internationally renowned El Sistema.

Sixteen active participants will have the opportunity to prepare and conduct an excerpt of given repertoire in a concert in Teatro Armonia with the leading professional regional orchestra of Venezuela Falcón Symphony Ochestra, while experiencing during a week a close view and interactive visits to the city Núcleo of Ateneo, the sub-urban Núcleo of Las Panelas and the rural Núcleo of Cabudare, in the highly touristic area of historic Coro in Venezuela.

Participants will each receive over 60 minutes of podium time, including 40 minutes with orchestra, 30 minutes with quintet, and their participation in the Final Concert. Additionally, detailed conducting technique master classes will be given daily by Maestros John Farrer and Raymond Harvey to all Participants and Auditors, as well as a comprehensive Video mentoring session for all Participants.

The goal of the Conductors Guild Training Workshops is to provide the maximum amount of specific and insightful guidance on both technical and musical matters to each attendee in a constructive, encouraging, and non-competitive environment.

This workshop is divided into two tiers:

  1. Participant: Sixteen core conductors who will conduct throughout the duration of the Workshop and in the Final Concert
  1. Auditor: Observing attendees who will attend to all technique master classes, rehearsals and to all interactive visits. No podium time will be given to Auditors during this Workshop

Beethoven – Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major

Brahms – Symphony No. 2 in D Major

Dvorak – Slavonic Dances Op. 46

Stravinsky – Symphony in Three Movements

Participants will be given some choice of the segments they will conduct for the Orchestra Sessions in consultation with the faculty. Quintet Sessions will be addressed to specific technique and interpretation aspects from specific excerpts of the repertoire. Participants will be expected to have a thorough preparation of the score in the assigned excerpt of the repertoire to be conducted in the Closing Concert.
