Assistant Conductor shall assist the Music Director and staff in all matters related to the artistic administration of the Canton Symphony Orchestra.
Assistant Conductor shall, in conjunction with the Music Director, President & CEO, and Director of Education and Community Engagement, plan and conduct Kinder Concerts, Young People’s Concerts and other educational concerts/services, and in general, actively participate in the direction and development of educational outreach activities for the Orchestra, as assigned.
Assistant Conductor shall serve as conductor of the Canton Strings, Canton Youth Symphony and Canton Youth Symphony Advanced Orchestra, and in that capacity, plan, program, oversee and manage the Youth Symphony program, including recruiting, coaching, rehearsals and performances. The Assistant Conductor will work with the Director of Education & Community Engagement to establish relationships with area instrumental music directors and teachers.
Assistant Conductor shall be the backup (cover) conductor for the Music Director and all guest conductors for all services and/or concerts of the Orchestra. The Assistant Conductor shall be available to program, rehearse and conduct Pops and Casual concerts and any other concerts, whether within or outside the Stark County region, as directed by the Music Director and the President & CEO.
Assistant Conductor shall aggressively and professionally promote the image and visibility of the Canton Symphony Orchestra in the greater Stark County Region. The Assistant Conductor will participate in the creation, development and implementation of community engagement strategies.
Assistant Conductor shall assist, if requested, with the artistic development of the Orchestra by evaluating the performances of the ensemble and individual musicians, and reporting the observed performance levels on a regular basis to the Music Director and management.
Assistant Conductor shall be available for media events, fund-raising promotions, speaking engagements, development meetings and activities, administrative meetings and other activities as determined and identified by management.
Assistant Conductor will maintain close contact with the office and will establish a consistent and regular presence in the office (minimum 10 hours per week) and maintain a principal residence in Stark County.
Assistant Conductor shall perform other reasonable duties as may be identified, assigned and required by the Executive Director.
|Outstanding musicianship; substantial instrumental conducting experience; strong programming and communication skills appropriate for musicians and audiences of all ages. Candidates should be available to start in July 2017|

Complete application will include a resume, repertoire list, three references, demonstration video (in rehearsal and performance – 15 minutes of each) and essay. The essay should be no more than 1500 words, addressing this topic: Explain how you believe education and outreach performance activities should relate to the primary artistic mission of a modern American symphony orchestra. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered.
If selected for the audition round, candidates must be available to be in Canton, Ohio during the week of May 8, 2017.
