Assistant Conductor – Jacksonville Symphony

Position Summary:The Jacksonville Symphony, with a $10 million annual operating budget, 38-week season and roster of 60 full-time musicians is seeking a conductor to join its growing artistic staff. This position will have conducting assignments with both the Jacksonville Symphony and the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestras.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a cover conductor and be of general assistance to the Music Director and Guest Conductors for the most efficient preparation of performances; lead sectionals as requested; substitute in case of emergency As assigned, prepare and conduct Pops Series concerts, Coffee Series concerts and Special presentations by the Jacksonville Symphony
  • Work with the Director of Education and Community Engagement and contracted education specialists to create, prepare and conduct Jacksonville Symphony educational concerts, including Family concerts, Preludes, Young People’s Concerts, Students at the Symphony, Symphonicity and other programs
  • Work with the Director of Artistic Operations and collaborative partners to create, prepare and conduct community engagement, contract services and run-out concerts
  • Serve as Conductor for at least one of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestras; prepare up to four separate programs annually per ensemble in accordance with appropriate curriculum standards; participate in JSYO auditions, orientations, retreats and concerto competitions; actively recruit JSYO members
  • Assist the Music Director and Director of Artistic Operations with program research, video program note script writing and general proofreading of artistic materials in print and online
  • Maintain general office hours during the season; attend meetings of the Artistic Operations staff and Board Programming Committee
  • Represent the Jacksonville Symphony and the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestras in the community; participate as assigned in promotional and development projects and events
  • Other duties as requested or assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; knowledge of a broad range of repertoire, including Classical to Popular music; strong communication, interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills; strong conducting experience, especially with professional orchestra musicians; the ability to mentor young musicians with experience leading youth ensembles; a minimum of two years conducting experience
  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree from a conservatory or school of music in performance, conducting or music education
  • A detailed knowledge of orchestra operations, including understanding of orchestra concert programming and knowledge of orchestral repertoire; must be able to work with artists with a broad spectrum of personalities
  • Ability to pass a background check required of the Symphony and its collaborative partners
  • Fluency in English
  • Responsible, reliable, able to work daytime, weekends and evenings; residency in Jacksonville, FL, required
  • Must have a positive attitude, be able to work as part of a high-functioning team, posses a passion for symphonic music, as well as a strong desire to bring symphonic music to diverse audiences

DEADLINE FOR APPLYING:  April 28, 2017

Candidates invited to the live audition in Jacksonville, FL, will be notified by 6 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017, at which point they will be given the audition list. Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to and from Jacksonville, as well as their lodging, though the Jacksonville Symphony does have a hotel partner that will provide discounted rates for all auditioning candidates. Invited candidates may also be required to present proof of their legal eligibility to work in the United States as a condition of being accepted to the live audition.

The live audition will take place in Jacksonville on Thursday, May 25, 2017 with semi-finals occurring in the morning, interviews immediately following
