Music Director and Symphony Orchestra Conductor: McHenry County Youth Orchestra and The Academy

The McHenry County Youth Orchestra (MCYO) welcomes nominations and applications for the position of Music Director and

Symphony Orchestra Conductor, available beginning with the 2017-18 season.

The Position:

The Music Director (MD) reports directly to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for fulfilling the artistic mission of the (3) youth orchestras and Music Academy for private lessons. He or she is responsible for the repertoire, programming and artistic production, and the selection and development of all student musicians. As the Orchestra’s artistic leader, the Music Director must build and sustain the Orchestra’s image in McHenry County and 17 surrounding areas in which we serve. The MD is expected to work closely with the officers of the Board and staff in carrying out these responsibilities and to participate actively in the Orchestra’s fundraising and community engagement initiatives. Additionally, candidates will demonstrate a genuine passion for working with young people and an understanding of a young musicians’ development. The MD will conduct all rehearsals of MCYO’s top tiered Symphony Orchestra, as well as performances. He or she will serve as a substitute for other ensembles, direct the artistic planning process, including the selection of all guest artists and soloists. The MD will also oversee all artistic staff, lead student recruitment strategies, and participate in auditions and placements. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

➢ Participation in the long range planning process;

➢ Attend all quarterly Board meetings;

➢ Work closely with the officers of the Board;

➢ Monitor the artistic budget;

➢ Maintain collaborative relationships with Music Academy Instructors, as well as private and public school music teachers, orchestras and band directors;

➢ Knowledge of current musical activities in the orchestral field;

➢ Work with the Board in creating new activities for MCYO and the Music Academy and its students;

➢ Management responsibilities include overseeing the positions of Orchestra Manager and Chamber Ensemble

Candidate Profile and Qualities:

The ideal candidate will be an outstanding musician with the skills and experience required to conduct musicians between the ages of 5-18. He or she will have a broad range of repertoire; knowledge of youth repertoire is a plus, including contemporary music, and the ability to create and help implement an overarching artistic vision for the (3) youth Orchestras. Candidates will possess a passion for developing young people as individuals and musicians. He or she will be approachable and engaging, with a collaborative spirit and strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills. Candidates will also possess a demonstrated record of collaborative relationships with boards, community arts partners, and peer conductors. He or she will also have a record of engagement with children, families, audiences and a connection to the broader community, as well as experience with music education. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to galvanize students, manage day-to-day demands and deadlines. He or she will also possess a vision to develop inspiring, innovative and collaborative programs.


Masters Degree in Music;

DMA in Conducting, preferred;

Knowledge of youth repertoire and music education is required.
