Conductor of Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra Part Time

Junior Academy offers outstanding tuition to young, talented musicians aged 12-18 on Saturdays during term time at one of the UK’s foremost music conservatoires.

We are seeking an exceptional conductor to work with the Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra. The suitable candidate will have the ability to inspire highly talented young musicians in a thriving musical environment, joining our teaching staff from January 2018. The orchestra is currently 90 strong and performs large-scale symphonic repertoire in termly concerts at the Academy. The orchestra has also on occasions performed at venues such as St John’s, Smith Square.

The post is hourly-paid and will include conducting the orchestra most Saturdays during term-time from 1-3pm. Extensive orchestral conducting experience is required for this post along with a deep knowledge and understanding of suitable repertoire for this age and standard of orchestra.

Current and previous repertoire performed by the Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra has included: Mussorgsky ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, Berlioz ‘Symphonie fantastique’, Sibelius ‘Symphony No.1’, Shostakovich Symphonies No. 5 & 6, Copland Symphony No. 3, Stravinsky ‘Petroushka’.

Many current students at Junior Academy are members of the National Youth Orchestra, National Youth Choir, London Schools Symphony and National Children’s Orchestra, with regular success in competitions at local and national level.  Graduates of Junior Academy frequently win places to study music at senior conservatoires or university, and many alumni now pursue successful careers as musicians.  For further details on our music provision, please visit www.ram.ac.uk/juniors.

Please submit a 10-20 minute video recording of you conducting together with your completed application form.  Ideally the video should be from the back of the orchestra and include a couple of contrasting pieces of music and a clip of a rehearsal.  The recording doesn’t need to be perfect in terms of recording quality, it is intended to give the panel an idea of your work.

Completed application forms and recordings must be received by 10am Monday 12 June 2017.

First interviews are expected to be held during week commencing 4 September. Second interviews, including a rehearsal and audition with the Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra, will be held on a Saturday (1-3pm) between 23 September and 21 October 2017
