Resident Conductor

The Boston New Music Initiative (BNMI) seeks one or more Resident Conductors for its ninth season (2017-2018) to perform with the Core Ensemble on one (1) to three (3) concerts for up to six (6) works per concert. The position is paid a per concert stipend. The Resident Conductor will work closely with the Artistic Director and Core Ensemble in realizing the works of living composers. He or she may also assist in determining rehearsal schedules, choosing repertoire and finding guest performers as requested by the Artistic Director.

MM in Conducting or commensurate experience
Experience leading a variety of ensembles
Experience performing the works of living composers
Working knowledge of late 20th and 21st century music
Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and oral
A strong commitment to the creation and promotion of new music
An interest in interdisciplinary endeavors

Repertoire list highlighting new music and world premieres
Names and contact info of two professional references with whom the applicant has worked, including one living composer
Video of recent conducting activities (maximum of 10 minutes).
Video should comprise several excerpts showing the conductor at their best
At least five minutes of the video should be rehearsal footage
Selections from contemporary works are strongly encouraged, but standard repertoire excerpts are acceptable.
Video(s) should be uploaded to a private YouTube channel and the link should be sent, with the other application materials, to the address listed below.

The Boston New Music Initiative, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on establishing, maintaining, and developing an international network of contemporary music champions, performers, conductors, directors, and composers of music so as to foster collaborations, new music concerts, and commissions in the music industry. The organization’s mission is to advance the careers of its members in the field of new music by serving as a resource for networking, professional development, commissioning, collaboration, and programming.

In its first 7 concert seasons, BNMI has performed the works of over 130 living composers, including 19 world premieres and three commissioned works. In an ongoing effort to recognize, perform, and create new repertoire for the concert hall and beyond, BNMI holds a commissioning competition, a young composers competition, and two international calls for scores each season, with the winning composers programmed on future BNMI seasons.
