Orchestra Director/Applied Strings – Indiana University of Pennsylvania Indiana, Pennsylvania



The Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for a full-time, temporary position in Orchestral Conducting and Applied Violin/Viola for the 2017-2018 academic year.


Conduct and coordinate all university orchestral ensembles and activities, teach undergraduate and graduate violin and viola students, graduate orchestral conducting students, Class Strings, and coach undergraduate and graduate string chamber music ensembles. The successful candidate will maintain a regional, national, or international presence while maintaining and expanding active relationships with area K-12 string teachers, collaborating with colleagues, assisting with recruitment, and performing other responsibilities according to the candidate’s areas of expertise and the needs of the department.

Examples of Duties:

Position Qualifications
Master’s degree in Conducting, Violin, Viola or Music Education is required; the successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of effective orchestral conducting and successful violin /viola studio teaching at the collegiate or professional levels, and a record of artistic and professional growth including recent significant violin/viola performance.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate in Conducting, Violin, Viola or Music Education, orchestral K-12 teaching, a strong background in string pedagogy, and the ability to collaborate with other arts and disciplines outside of the arts.
The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Candidates for this position must be prepared to teach a violin/viola master class and perform a recital on violin or viola should a campus interview be conducted.
Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview(s).

The work of this position occurs in a typical office environment. Although infrequent, periods of heavy exertion may occur. Incumbent must have the following abilities:
Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
Communicate both orally and in writing to issue, receive and carry out instructions and orders effectively and to convey information to a variety of co-workers and the general public.
Use a variety of common office machines such as telephones, calculators, copiers, computer terminals, keyboards, video display terminals, auxiliary printers and similar equipment.
Perform manual duties such as lifting and carrying various weight limits.
Operate office equipment which may require stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
Provide assistance and guidance to internal and external customers.
Follow oral and written instructions.
