Pre-College String Orchestra Conductor

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is looking for a dynamic String Orchestra Conductor to lead our Pre-College string orchestra, which consists of string players primarily ages 8-12.

Job Duties

The Pre-College String Orchestra Conductor will:

  • Conduct weekly rehearsals following the Pre-College Academic Calendar August – May, annually. (Saturdays, 2:00PM – 3:15PM).
  • Prepare and conduct a minimum of three (3) performances per year, in addition to any additional outreach or tour performances.
  • Select repertoire appropriate for the orchestra, making effective use of all available personnel and exposing students to a broad range of styles and skills.
  • Develop the season calendar in collaboration with the Pre-College staff to include performance dates, rehearsal schedule, and/or outreach performances.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with the Division Director, Office Manager, Ensembles Coordinator, and Student Orchestra Assistant Artists regarding weekly rehearsals.
  • Prepare performance materials including markings, edits, and any necessary modifications
  • Create and communicate seating assignments.
  • Mentor Student Orchestra Assistant by providing guidance and performance opportunities as appropriate.
  • Develop a working relationship with area music educators and arts institutions.
  • Attend three (3) artistic planning meetings per year as scheduled by Division Director.
  • Adhere to ensemble’s budget as set forth by the Division Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Director and Ensembles Coordinator.


  • Demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a conductor, string player, and educator.
  • A minimum of three (3) years professional experience working in the field of youth arts education with a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent required.
  • A strong background and understanding of string pedagogy and string orchestra repertoire.
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with SFCM administrative staff and faculty.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills; maintain a good relationship with parents; demand a high standard of excellence while creating an encouraging, inspiring, and engaging youth ensemble experience.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required for the selected candidate.
