Professor in composition and conducting of Big Band and large ensembles

The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg (RAMA) wishes to strengthen and secure the positive development for the rhythmic programmes (e.g. jazz, pop and global music etc.) as we are experiencing right now, and we therefore advertise for a professor in composition and conducting of big band and large ensembles.

The position

The future professor must be able to educate rhythmic students at the highest level within composition, music conducting and arrangement; lead RAMAs great ensembles including big band, coordinate various projects with larger and smaller constellations as well as attend to instrumental subjects.
The professor has to contribute to the cooperation and development of the academy programmes together with the other teachers and the management.

Finally, the professor has to participate actively in talent development and initiatives including cooperation with Danish and international big bands.

The position provides an opportunity for research/artistic development, administrative work when organizing classes, and participation in exams.

RAMA offers rhythmic programmes in both Aarhus and Aalborg. The rhythmic composers, both at master and postgraduate soloist level, are located in Aarhus where the classes are held, but the professor must also take part in projects and meeting activities in Aalborg.

The work schedule will be planned in agreement with the Principal/Head of studies.


The applicant must have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive artistic activities at an international level
  • Experienced teacher at bachelor, master and postgraduate soloist level
  • Organizational experience with for example curriculum development
  • Extensive independent artistic and pedagogical development work

Terms of employment and salary

The position is filled based on a collective contract and is classified as salary class 37 where the salary as of 1 April 2017 is DKK 543,212.00 per year for a full time position. Pension and individual bonuses must be negotiated between RAMA and the relevant organization.

The position is to be filled by 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible for a limited period of five years with the opportunity of extension for up to three years. Furthermore, reference is made to the circular on the position structure at the Danish Music Academies of 8 June 2004.

Employment is carried out in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Culture’s regulations of 12 October 2010 concerning employment of permanent teachers at the conservatories whereby an evaluation of qualification must be carried out prior to employment. Applicants might be invited to a playing and/or teaching demonstration.

As mentioned above, RAMA has departments in both Aarhus and Aalborg and the professor must expect to work in both departments.
