The Department of Music at the University of Chicago seeks a dynamic, experienced choral conductor with a broad knowledge of repertoire from different choral traditions around the world to fill a half-time position as Lecturer and Choral Director in the Department of Music. The goal of this position is to enrich and expand the choral program sponsored by the University of Chicago Department of Music, which currently encompasses four different choirs within a large co-curricular performance program on campus. Primary duties of this position include: serve as Music Director and Conductor of the University Chorus, which is the largest choral ensemble in the program (100+ members) and which includes community members as well as College and graduate students; to serve as Music Director and Conductor of the University Women’s Ensemble, an ensemble (of 60+ singers) that regularly incorporates a wide variety of world music traditions and alternative concert formats into its season; to work with the Director of Performance Programs, the Director of Chapel Music, and the Director of Vocal Studies to develop meaningful opportunities for the further education of choral singers on campus; to work with the Director of Performance Programs and the staff of the Logan Center for the Arts to develop meaningful collaborations with other Chicago-area choral ensembles, UChicago Ensembles-in-Residence, and choral programs at local and Midwestern colleges and universities. The Lecturer/Choral Director will have full responsibility for planning, rehearsing, and conducting weekly rehearsals of each of the two assigned choral ensembles; for conducting at least one large-scale choral concert per quarter; and for preparing the large University Chorus for its annual or biennial collaboration(s) with the University Symphony Orchestra. A BA degree is required, and MA degree is preferred. The successful candidate will have a broad and deep knowledge of repertoire, vocal styles, and authentic performance practice from musical cultures outside of the traditional Western canon, and will have extensive contacts in the choral world. A demonstrated track record of successful conducting at the University level is required; experience in working successfully with community choruses of different ages and different backgrounds is strongly preferred. Salary commensurate with experience; half-time position with benefits. Position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
