The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras (WYSO) is seeking applicants for the position of Music Director.

Music Director
Position Summary: The Music Director is the conductor of the Youth Orchestra and the artistic head of WYSO. As artistic leader, s/he is responsible for managing the development and execution of the artistic and educational activities in accordance with WYSO’s vision and mission while at all times maintaining a collaborative working relationship with the administrative staff. The Music Director exercises authority in all artistic matters according to the guidelines established by the Board of Directors, including program development, repertoire selection, auditions, rehearsals, and selection of players and guest artists. S/he works in close collaboration with the Board and Executive Director and serves as the lead artistic liaison with community groups and educational institutions. The MD must be a musician of the highest quality, possess a commanding ability to communicate through music, and be committed to educating young people through music. The Music Director is responsible for hiring, supervising and evaluating all artistic staff.
Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years conducting experience with student, professional or non-professional orchestras

Degree in music, music education or equivalent experience required; MM, DMA or Artist Diploma

Successful experience providing leadership in complex situations

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with developing musicians in a caring and supportive manner

Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking

Excellent interpersonal skills

Broad knowledge of repertoire suitable for youth orchestras

Demonstrated ability to plan and lead educational and artistic development of performing ensembles

A sense of humor is a real plus

Three (3) professional references with contact information

Recent Conducting Videos (within 2 years) – 3-5 video links totaling a maximum of 120 minutes representing both rehearsal and performance. No DVDs please.

Search and Decision-making Timeline

Materials Accepted: July 1- August 15, 2017

12 Semi-finalists selected; video links and letters requested: September 1, 2017

6 Semi-finalist Skype/phone interviews: October, 2017

3 Finalist visits and interviews in Madison, WI: January 2018

Announcement: March 2018

Appointment Begins: July 1, 2018
