Reports to the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors

Summary: 

The Board of Directors of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is seeking a dynamic, visionary, well-qualified Music Director who will successfully lead the orchestra, engage the community with relevant programming, establish healthy partnerships, and aid in development activities to support the organization and the mission and goals of the WSO.
Responsibilities:

  • Craft a dynamic season of orchestral literature on an annual basis that is within the size, scope, and ability of the WSO; excite and enrich the cultural lives of the community at large, and inspire the imagination.
  • Serve as a role model for artistic excellence while being open to the ideas of others; inspire creativity, and engage the orchestra
  • Rehearse and conduct the WSO to achieve high artistic standards
  • Collaboratively facilitate recruitment and audition orchestra members as needed
  • Engage with the community for the purpose of serving the mission of the WSO
  • Cultivate positive and collaborative working relationships with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, musicians, donors, and other constituents
  • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision of the Music Librarian/Personnel Manager
  • Create and maintain an environment that motivates and fosters the musical growth of the orchestra members
  • Create and maintain a positive and safe working environment for all orchestra members
  • Propose the annual artistic budget to the Executive Director that supports the endeavors of the orchestra, while working effectively within the fiscal parameters of a non-profit organization
  • Work within operational timeframes as established by the Board of Directors
  • Demonstrate commitment to support, create, and expand the educational components of the WSO mission, which may include presenting pre-concert lectures, offering collaborative presentations in the public schools and Casper College, and engaging in other germane educational endeavors that include the biennial Young Artists Competition
  • Maintain and develop relationships with and awareness of the current field of solo artists
  • Provide collaborative performance opportunities with other artistic organizations in the region
  • Provide and implement strategies for audience engagement and growth

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Music from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated highly skilled musical talent, rehearsal techniques, and dynamic conducting skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Awareness of current solo artists
  • Conducting experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Background in professional instrumental performance
  • Interest in engaging diverse audiences/communities

Salary:

  • The conductor earns an annual salary, which is competitive based on experience and qualifications.

Notes:

Finalists will be invited to guest conduct during the 2018-19 concert season.
Expectation is that the successful candidate meets the requirements of the responsibilities above. Normally, the season includes six concerts.

Orchestra Description:

The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra is a long-established regional performing arts organization, located in Casper, Wyoming and currently in its 68th season. The Orchestra is vital to the local community enhancing its culture, education and economy. The WSO’s concert season is comprised of four masterwork performances, a holiday concert, a children’s program and a community outreach program, Music on the Move. New this season was our first ever outdoor concert in Washington Park during the Eclipse festival weekend in August, this is a program we would like to continue as a free community summer concert series. We employ over 70 professional musicians from Wyoming and the region and bring nationally and internationally acclaimed guests artists to perform in Casper, WY.  The WSO’s goal is to build a premier arts organization in Central Wyoming that presents outstanding symphonic music to thousands of Wyomingites of all ages and backgrounds. We want to ensure that live music is available to anyone who wants to experience its transformative power while at the same time serving the community through our Music on the Move program which includes music education and free community performances.
