Assistant Conductor, Charleston Symphony Orchestra

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra seeks a talented and dynamic conductor to serve as Assistant for the CSO, and Conductor of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra (“CSYO”). The CSYO is a division of the CSO’s education program and requires a conductor with long range vision, leadership, and a strong commitment to building the program in the community. The Assistant Conductor reports to the Music Director and the Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
CSO Assistant Conductor:
Provides artistic and logistical support to all CSO conductors as directed 
Assists Music Director in artistic research as assigned
Serves as the cover conductor for all CSO rehearsals and concerts
Participates in educational and community outreach activities as assigned
Opportunity to conduct CSO education, community, and other concerts (conducting opportunities are not guaranteed but may be assigned at the discretion of the Music Director).
CSYO Conductor:
Conducts CSYO rehearsals and concerts
In collaboration with CSO Director of Education and Community Engagement and CSYO Advisory Committee, oversees all artistic matters for the ensemble, including auditions, rehearsals, and repertoire selection Serves as liaison between CSYO and local schools and community music educators Helps develop the overall public image of the CSYO by playing a visible and active role in the community
Qualifications:
Graduate degree in orchestral conducting or equivalent experience
Experience conducting professional and youth orchestras preferred
Broad knowledge of symphonic repertoire and concert programming
Strong commitment to music education
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Responsible, reliable, able to work according to CSO’s schedule
Other requirements:
Residency in Charleston, SC
Authorization to work in the U.S.
Must pass a background check
Fluent in English

Deadline for applying is February 23, 2018.
Candidates invited to audition in Charleston will be notified by 6 pm on Friday, March 9, 2018, whereupon they will be provided with detailed audition information. Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to and from Charleston. CSO will provide accommodation with host families. Invited candidates will be required to present proof of their legal eligibility to work in the United States as a condition of being accepted to audition.
Auditions will be held with the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra on April 8, 2018, and with the core musicians of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra on April 9, 2018. Interviews will be held on April 9,
2018, following the audition.
