2019 Charleston Symphony Orchestra Conducting Workshop

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra is presenting its first conducting workshop between Sunday January 6th, 2019 and Thursday January 10th, 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina. The workshop will be led by internationally renowned conducting teacher Mark Gibson, Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra Studies at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, Aik Khai Pung, Assistant Professor of Music and Music Director of the CCM Concert Orchestra, and Ken Lam, Music Director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

The workshop is designed for up to eight pre-professional conductors and eight auditors looking to improve their conducting skills in a supportive but intensive setting. Each conductor will have over 120 minutes of podium time as well as group and individual coaching with faculty, CSO musicians and staff. The workshop will conclude with a concert led by all active participants. Auditors attend all sessions and will conduct in one quintet session.

Repertoire:
Beethoven Symphony No. 1, 2 and 5
Beethoven Egmont and Coriolan Overtures
Haydn Symphony No. 103 (Drumroll)
Brahms Symphony No. 1 and 3 (not for concert)

Concert repertoire will be chosen based on faculty recommendation and participants’ preferences.

Tuition and Lodging

  • $1800 for active participants (maximum 8 conductors)
  • $400 for auditors (maximum 8 auditors, auditors attend all sessions and activities and will conduct in 1 quintet session)
  • all participants and auditors will be housed with host families
  • all participants are responsible for their own meals

  • Applications will be considered starting September 1, 2019 until places are filled. In any event, acceptances will be notified by November 20th, 2018
  • Application fee: $25
  • Tuition for accepted participants must be paid in full on or before November 18th, 2018
