TITLE: Suzuki Da Capo and Sinfonia Orchestra Conductor
REPORTS TO: Director of Suzuki Talent Education
LOCATION: Minneapolis, onsite and in-person
SCHEDULE: Saturdays required
STATUS: Exempt; part time, 2-4 hours per week September – May
JOB SUMMARY
This position will conduct MacPhail’s Suzuki beginning string orchestra and the early-advanced level string orchestra and will provide associated administrative support.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct and organize 2 Suzuki Department String Orchestras:
- DaCapo Orchestra – a beginning string orchestra for students in grades 4 – 5
- Sinfonia orchestra – an early-advanced level string orchestra for students in grades 7 – 9.
- Conduct weekly, one-hour rehearsals for each orchestra on Saturday mornings at 10:00 and 11:00 AM, September through April
- Prepare students for 2 orchestra concerts per year, in December and late April
- Assist with orchestra auditions in May.
- Coordinate attendance, music selection, and concert preparation with the Suzuki String Coordinator.
- Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education
- Conducting experience – prefer experience with elementary and middle school students
- Knowledge of standard string chamber orchestra literature
- Experience in motivating elementary and middle school students
- Experience in building a string orchestra program
- String player is preferred, but not required
- A Suzuki trained teacher is preferred but not required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with Suzuki conductors and string teachers
