Leipziger Universitätsorchester

Conductor Leipziger Universitätsorchester

(per service, short-term)

€650 p/month

The Leipzig University Orchestra (LUO) is looking for a new conductor starting next summer (2024) for a period of two years.

The orchestra was founded in October 2003. Within a short period of time it developed from initially some few enthusiasts to a complete, classical symphony orchestra.

The MDR (public broadcasting) Symphony Orchestra supports the LUO with a sponsorship: We have sectional rehearsals under guidance of musicians of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and we have the possibility to use the MDR Symphony Orchestra studio.

The orchestra benefits from its committed musicians who are encouraged to participate actively within a democratic structure. Our statute can be found on our webpage. The concert program, section leaders and the conductor are chosen democratically by the orchestra. The election of the conductor takes place every two years.

Each semester, we rehearse and perform one full symphonic program. This program is chosen by the orchestra from suggestions of the members. This process takes place under consultation of and in close cooperation with the conductor.

The prepared program is performed in one or two concerts (one of them in the Gewandhaus). In addition, the orchestra contributes to the enrolment ceremony of the University of Leipzig (in the beginning of October).
Weekly rehearsals during the lecture period (on Monday evenings from 7:00-10:00 pm).
One rehearsal weekend away from Leipzig in a youth hostel.
Very good knowledge of the German or English language is essential for good musical work.

The LUO consists of amateur musicians, although of highly motivated ones. Hence, the weekly rehearsals during the lecture period are of fundamental importance and always to be attended by the conductor.
Fee based employment at the university.

closing date: 30 Nov 2023

start date: April 2024
