Artistic Director

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra based in Brooklyn, NY, invites applications for a permanent Artistic Director starting with its 2025-2026 season. The position is part time and eligible for compensation.

MUSICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Propose musical programming to the Board of Directors for approval, working within an approved budget.

Coordinate with librarians and other personnel on the acquisition, rental and distribution of scores. Work with section leaders on bowings and markings.

Conduct all rehearsals and concerts as agreed by contract and supervise the work of any guest conductors. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 7pm – 9:45pm, September – May/June.

Assist with the planning and organizing of auditions for membership. Select and approve new players; select principal players, assist with determining seating within each section.

Work with the personnel manager on player outreach and development.

Exercise leadership in developing the artistic quality of the orchestra. Collaborate with the Board of Directors in developing long-range artistic and development plans for the orchestra such as special concerts, chamber ensemble programs, tours, etc.

Stay abreast of artistic activities in the orchestra field. Recommend to the Board of Directors new activities that may advance the orchestra’s objectives.

Qualified candidates will be selected for interviews in the Spring of 2024. Finalists will conduct a full program cycle during the BSO’s 2024-2025 season, with the selected candidate notified in April 2025.
