Vanska receives conductor award

Minnesota Orchestra music director Osmo Vanska received a conductor’s award from Columbia University last week.

The Ditson Conductor’s Award is the oldest award honoring conductors for their support of American music. Vanska has directed the Minnesota Orchestra for seven years.

As the orchestra’s music director, “Vanska has shown remarkable commitment not only in performing contemporary music but especially in fostering the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, an annual mentoring program in which the orchestra rehearses and performs works by young American composers,” said Fred Lerdahl, an official with the Ditson fund and music professor at Columbia.

Vanska is the fourth Minnesota Orchestra music director to receive the Ditson award.
